Episode #273(-275): Season 11 ‘One For The Road’ Unedits (May 20, 1993)

Let’s start with the last CHEERS episode. Aired May 20th, 1993, "One For The Road" was originally broadcast as a one and a half hour goodbye to the little bar in Boston where everyone knows your name. The fanfare was immense for a show which seemed to win the hearts of America.

This episode was later cut up into three single episodes when it made it to syndication and seems to have lost a few scenes from that original, uncut broadcast. The DVD release is the edited three episodes edited together . . . confusing, I know.

One for the road 1

Below is a video of the scenes that were edited out of the syndication and DVD release of this seminal television event. Also included in the video are the commercial spots and the Tonight Show segue at the show’s completion.

We see the actual, extended opening scene, some commercial spots from the night of the broadcast & then some other cut scenes. The part where Carla talks about being a mother as the point to life is interesting because it shows a different take than the one from the edited episode! (we will see more of this in future edited episodes) There are a couple real subtle differences: different intro music . . . Also gotta love the message to the fans, thanking them for coming around all those Thursdays (after the credits) and the Jay Leno Tonight
Show teaser.

273 :11x26 - One for the Road

First aired: May/20/1993
Director: James Burrows
Guest star: Shelley Long (Diane Chambers), Kelsey Grammer (Dr. Frasier Crane), Gregg Berger (Announcer Of Cable Ace Awards (Uncredited)), Anthony Heald (Kevin), Rick Berman (Bar patron)

Diane's re-visit to the bar is not a pleasant one, when she brings her husband up, Sam feels intimidated and pretends to be married to Rebecca. When the date turns out to be a disaster, Sam and Diane get re-engaged, but once again things fall through. Meanwhile, Rebecca at last becomes engaged to her boyfriend.

Thanks for posting the edits of the final episode. As a die-hard Cheers fan I was incredibly frustrated by the cut final scene between Sam and Rebecca: The "my best friend" line from Rebecca and their long final kiss were poignant moments and it's a shame most people who watch the episode for the first time (or for the first time in nearly 20 years) will miss it. Cheers really deserves better than horrible DVD treatment it has received.

Keep up the good work on this site. You should also check out the AV club Cheers classic TV recaps. They have already done Seasons 1 and 2 and are taking a summer break before resuming Season 3.

Best regards
